Why "Normal" Lab Work Doesn't Always Mean You Feel Normal

"My doctor said everything was normal."
If I had a dollar for every time I've heard that, I probably wouldn't need to work anymore.
Patients come into my office every week feeling exhausted, struggling to lose weight, dealing with brain fog, anxiety, hormone changes, digestive issues, or simply saying, "I just don't feel like myself." Many have already seen other providers and had blood work done. They're often told everything looks fine.
But here's the thing...
Normal isn't always optimal, and lab work is only one piece of the puzzle.
Functional medicine isn't about chasing expensive tests or replacing evidence-based medicine. It's about asking better questions.
Instead of focusing only on a diagnosis, we step back and ask:
When did you start feeling this way?
Has anything changed over the last few years?
How are you sleeping?
What does your nutrition actually look like?
Are your hormones changing?
Could insulin resistance, inflammation, nutrient deficiencies, stress, or thyroid function be contributing?
Are all of these seemingly unrelated symptoms actually connected?
Sometimes the answer is straightforward. Sometimes it's several small issues adding up over time.
Either way, my goal isn't to hand you a prescription and send you on your way. It's to help you understand why your body is sending the signals it is.
That doesn't mean everyone needs dozens of specialty tests or a cabinet full of supplements. In fact, many patients improve with targeted lifestyle changes, appropriate medications when indicated, hormone optimization, correcting nutritional deficiencies, or addressing underlying metabolic concerns.
I believe healthcare works best when patients understand what's happening in their own bodies. That means taking time to explain lab results, discussing treatment options, answering questions, and creating a plan that makes sense for your life—not someone else's.
If you've ever left an appointment feeling unheard, rushed, or frustrated because you were told everything was "normal" despite knowing something wasn't right, you're not alone.
You deserve a provider who listens, looks at the bigger picture, and works with you to find answers.
Because feeling "fine" shouldn't be the goal.
Feeling like yourself again should be.
